Fans of washed Yirgacheffes, particularly those who loved our Good Food Award winning Idido from 2016-17, will certainly enjoy this delightful coffee. Sweet, delicate, and floral yet satisfyingly structured. We love this coffee brewed through a paper filter with a 1:16 ratio.
Negele Gorbitu was founded in 1996 following the end of communist rule in Ethiopia, with geographic divisions according to traditional ethnic divisions. With seed capital of just 400 birr ($15 USD), 64 original members incorporated the Negele Gorbitu cooperative on the border of Oromia and Yirgacheffe regions. By 2011, the organization had grown to over 1600 members with capital of 2.78 million birr ($102,000 USD) and a productive capacity of 10 containers.
Education, health care, and access to water in Ethiopia are all extremely limited. Despite the country’s coffee exports accounting for nearly 60 percent of the national GDP, many coffee farmers and their families live in dire poverty. Education, health care, and access to water are all still very limited in Ethiopia. HG has a special relationship with farmers there thanks to Project Ethiopia, a partnership via our sister nonprofit, On the Ground. Project Ethiopia focused on raising awareness on the importance of education and funded the development of three schools for young children in Ethiopia.
