Safe Harbor is a seasonal emergency shelter. After a successful community campaign in 2017, a new permanent facility was constructed in Traverse City. The facility can accommodate 65 guests, with an overflow capacity of 80 persons. It houses beds, a common area, kitchen, bathrooms with showers, a laundry area and other amenities. Additionally, the front of the building hosts a housing resource center for those experiencing homelessness on the street.
“Our entire organization of volunteers is excited to take this next big step in order to create a safe place for people experiencing homelessness during the brutal winter months,“ says Board Chair Peter Starkel.
Safe Harbor also focuses on community partnerships in order to better collaborate on long-term solutions to ending homelessness in our region. The organization was borne of tragedy--starting nearly 15 years ago after a homeless individual fell into Kids Creek and subsequently froze to death. In 2003, The First Church of the Nazarene said, “No more.” They opened their doors and began offering meals and shelter during the coldest times. The next year, several other churches joined to form a rotating shelter network. Today, 23 churches participate, and a nightly average of 64 individuals are expected over the season spanning from November through April.
Safe Harbor’s guests include adults, over the age of eighteen, who are able to leave drugs and alcohol at the door in order to provide a safe environment for other guests and volunteers.
• 74% are from Grand Traverse County
• 85% are from the five-county region
• 93% are from the ten counties of northern Michigan
Since 2012, Safe Harbor has seen an 85% increase in bed nights. Today in Traverse City, nearly 100 people are living on the street. Most have mental illness, substance abuse issues, or a combination of the two. Safe Harbor also helps with individualized housing assistance and transportation to and from the shelter, ultimately providing a vital safety net for people when they are most vulnerable. The overall goal is to assist street homeless into permanent or supportive housing.
When you purchase Harbor blend, you’re supporting Safe Harbor’s ability to provide food, shelter and hope for those in need.
